Recreational Unit / Vehicle Parking Reform for Surrey
A proposal for fair practical zoning reform for recreational unit.
We are seeking a bylaw that truly reflects the practical dimensions of residential properties, moving street parking onto driveways where it belongs and the realities of the recreational season, and the active lifestyle that defines our community.

Addressing common problems
Proposed Change:
1-metre setback from the Sidewalk/Road edge
Parked vehicles must be set back at least 1 Metre from the sidewalk. Where no sidewalk exists, the setback is measured at least 1 metre from the edge of the road.
The setback is measured from the sidewalk or road edge, not from the property line.

Why this reform matters
Most RV/Motorhomes parked in good faith on residential driveways overhang into "the boulevard", currently placing homeowners in technical violation (based on 1M property line setback) even when no obstruction to pedestrian or vehicular traffic exists.
Most residents with supportive or indifferent neighbours park their recreational units (technically in breach), without consequence, year after year whereas residents targeted by a single grieved resident face enforcement action, potential fines, and forced removal of their recreational unit.

Addressing current parking gaps
Surrey Parking ByLaw Reform introduces two complementary reforms to address the current gaps in recreational unit (RU) parking and storage regulation:
- Front driveway and boulevard parking permitted for all recreational units with minimum 1.M clearance from sidewalk interior edge or pavement edge.
- Hard-surfaced driveway/parking pad required; valid insurance required; no sight-line obstruction
SOLUTION: Surrey's Zoning Bylaw amended to permit RU Driveway Parking
1.M Sidewalk/Roadway Setback Requirement
Current RU Parking Set Back: 1M from PROPERTY LINE
Proposed RU Parking Set Back 1M from Sidewalk
